Historic Ballroom Parquetry Restoration – Zurbano Palace
Palacio de Zurbano · Calle Zurbano (Chamberí, Madrid) · Neoclassical aristocratic palace, 19th-century ballroom marquetry.

Work performed
Specialist conservation and master restoration of noble wood parquet and artistic geometric marquetry across the state ballroom of Palacio de Zurbano, in Madrid’s historic Chamberí district. Built in the late 19th century and currently serving high-level ministerial receptions, the building required delicate craftsmanship conforming to heritage standards.
Flooring characteristics & constructive challenge
The ballroom floor features intricate parquetry panels combining European oak, Spanish walnut, and contrasting noble species arranged in radiating star and geometric inlay patterns. Decades of microclimate shifts—specifically Madrid’s acute winter drops in indoor relative humidity—had caused shrinkage gaps, joint movement, and localized detachment of delicate timber veneers.
Technical intervention & finish
Each detached marquetry element was meticulously lifted, cleaned, and hand-adhered using reversible structural conservation adhesives. Surface restoration utilized calibrated fine-grit sanding with continuous cyclonic dust extraction, preserving the historical patina and noble timber wear layer. Joints were sealed with color-matched wood-flour binder resin, followed by three coats of commercial-grade 2K waterborne polyurethane in an ultramatt finish, ensuring long-term wear protection without unnatural shine.
