Essential engineering rules, thermal resistance limits, and commissioning protocols for installing real wood over radiant heating and cooling in Madrid.

1. Thermal Resistance Limit: \(R \le 0.15 \, \text^2\text\)

Under Spanish and European standard UNE 56810, the total thermal resistance of the wood flooring and its adhesive layer must not exceed \(0.15 \, \text^2\text\). Engineered planks between 12 mm and 15 mm thickness represent the optimal balance between acoustic comfort, durability, and thermal conductivity.

2. Wood Species Selection (Dimensional Stability)

Wood is hygroscopic and naturally reacts to temperature and humidity variations. Stable hardwood species are recommended for radiant systems: European Oak, Teak, Iroko, and Doussie. Species with high shrinkage coefficients (such as Beech or Guatambú) should be avoided over heating screeds.

3. Screed Moisture & Heating Commissioning Protocol

  • Moisture Check: Cement screeds must have a residual moisture content below 1.8% (or 0.3% for anhydrite screeds) measured using a calibrated carbide hygrometer (CM test).
  • Thermal Shock Protocol: The underfloor heating system must run through a gradual heating and cooling cycle prior to floor installation to release structural tensions.
  • Elastic Adhesive Bonding: Direct full-surface bonding with silane-modified polymer adhesives ensures zero air pockets and maximum heat transfer.
