The Short Answer: Yes, If the Top Layer is at Least 2.5 mm

Unlike synthetic laminate floors (which have no real wood and cannot be sanded), high-quality engineered hardwood features a top layer of real solid timber (the wear layer) bonded to a stable multi-ply backing. If this wear layer is 2.5 mm or thicker, it can be professionally sanded and refinished multiple times.

Wear Layer Thickness Guidelines

  • 2.5 mm – 3.0 mm: Allows 1 to 2 precision micro-sanding cycles using planetary multi-head sanders.
  • 3.5 mm – 4.5 mm: Allows 3 to 4 complete refinishing passes throughout its lifetime.
  • 6.0 mm: Comparable to solid hardwood plank flooring, allowing 5+ sanding cycles over 50+ years.
